Synopsis

'Lost Airmen of Buchenwald' is a feature-documentary chronicling the little-known story of Allied airmen imprisoned at the Buchenwald Concentration Camp World War II. In the summer of 1944, 168 airmen from the US, England and other Allied nations were captured by the German Gestapo and sent to the infamous 'Koncentration Lager Buchenwald' in Germany, a slave labor camp where over 50,000 people were murdered and worked-to-death. Accused of being terrorists by Nazi leadership, the Allied flyers were sentenced to die at the camp. 'Lost Airmen of Buchenwald' tells their impossible story of survival, from the infamous Fresnes Prison in Paris, to the horrors of Buchenwald and beyond, as Germany collapsed around them under the weight of the advancing Russian and Allied armies. This globe-spanning project is built on interviews with surviving POWs (including the groups commanding officer, New Zealand war hero Phil Lamason) and members of the French Resistance, productions at Buchenwald and other European locations, and supporting film footage and photographs from the era.
