A Year Off The Beach
United States / English / 20 min / Drama / 2023
Vic, a down-on-his-luck father has been absent from his daughter Ella’s life for a year. He plans a day out at the beach together in hopes to reconnect with her. Ella, however, is hurt by her father’s absence and painfully resists Vic’s attempts to bond with her. At the beach, she refuses to go into the water with Vic and when he pleads with her, she ignores him and plays with his phone instead. When Vic returns from swimming, Ella is nowhere to be found. Ella reappears after some time upset at Vic for not looking for her. In the middle of this heated argument, Vic realizes that Ella has lost his phone. Because Vic keeps his money on his phone, they can’t buy food or get home. Determined to not lose this opportunity to rekindle his relationship with his daughter, Vic asks Ella to follow him to a busy street. From afar, Ella sees her father talking to a crowd of people. Embarrassed by the idea that he is begging for money, she begins to leave. Suddenly, she hears Vic singing a beautiful song and returns to his side, in awe. Back at Ella’s apartment, she hesitates to show her father love but eventually embraces him.
