WHO WE ARE

Where stories come alive. Where filmmakers, film lovers, and dreamers connect.

The Broward County Film Society (BCFS) is the driving force behind South Florida’s vibrant film culture. Through world-class festivals, unforgettable screenings, filmmaker conversations, educational programs, and community events, we bring people together through the power of storytelling.

For more than four decades, we’ve introduced audiences to groundbreaking films, launched emerging talent, welcomed celebrated filmmakers from around the world, and created experiences that inspire, entertain, and spark conversation.

From students discovering their creative voice to seasoned filmmakers sharing their vision, BCFS serves as a home for anyone who believes cinema can change perspectives, build community, and enrich lives.

Every screening, festival, workshop, and event is an invitation to explore new ideas, celebrate diverse voices, and experience the magic that only film can create.

We’re more than a film society. We’re a community united by the stories that move us.

Three Ways to Experience the Magic of Film

Whether you’re discovering an independent masterpiece, attending a world-renowned festival, or connecting with fellow film lovers, BCFS offers year-round opportunities to engage with cinema in meaningful and unforgettable ways.

Where every screening feels special.

Nestled in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, Savor Cinema is more than a movie theater—it’s a gathering place for curious minds, passionate film lovers, and creative thinkers.

From acclaimed independent films and international treasures to filmmaker Q&As, live events, and cultural celebrations, Savor Cinema offers experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Every visit is an opportunity to discover something unexpected, connect with your community, and experience film the way it was meant to be seen.

A celebration of cinema that transforms South Florida every year.

As one of the longest-running film festivals in the United States, FLIFF brings the world to Broward County. Each year, filmmakers, actors, industry leaders, and audiences gather to experience premieres, award-winning films, documentaries, shorts, and unforgettable special events.

More than a festival, FLIFF creates moments of discovery—where audiences meet the artists behind the films, emerging voices find their platform, and lifelong memories are made.

Every February, Broward County becomes a destination for cinema lovers from around the globe.

FLIFF’s latest annual addition gives incredible stories told in under 20 minutes center stage

FLIFFShorts is the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival’s dedicated showcase for short-form filmmaking, celebrating creativity, innovation, and emerging talent from around the world. The program features a diverse collection of narrative, documentary, animated, and experimental short films that highlight compelling stories and unique artistic voices. FLIFFShorts provides filmmakers with valuable exposure and audiences with an opportunity to discover fresh perspectives, making it an exciting platform for the next generation of cinematic storytellers.

Also branded as “The Savior-faire Shorts Film Festival”, the fest is held each November at Savor Cinema.

A few questions often asked:

How is the BCFS Funded?
The Broward County Film Society is funded through a combination of ticket sales, memberships, special events, sponsorships, grants, and charitable donations. Revenue from Savor Cinema, the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, and other programs helps support daily operations and cultural programming.

As a nonprofit organization, the Society also relies on contributions from individuals, businesses, foundations, and public arts agencies. This support helps ensure that film, educational, and community programs remain accessible while advancing the Society’s mission to promote the cinematic arts throughout Broward County.

Why does FLIFF rely on public funding as opposed to movie theaters that operate as “for profit” entities?
Unlike commercial movie theaters and multiplexes, which primarily generate revenue by showing mainstream studio releases with broad audience appeal, film societies and film festivals are mission-driven nonprofit organizations focused on cultural enrichment, education, and artistic development. They often present independent, international, documentary, classic, and emerging films that may not attract large commercial audiences but provide significant cultural and educational value.

Film societies and festivals also invest in filmmaker programs, student outreach, workshops, panel discussions, community engagement, and special events that are not designed to generate profits. These activities create opportunities for artistic expression, cultural exchange, and audience development, but frequently operate at a financial loss.

Funding support from donors, sponsors, foundations, and public agencies helps bridge the gap between earned revenue and the true cost of delivering these programs. This support ensures that diverse voices, independent storytelling, film education, and unique cultural experiences remain accessible to the community, preserving a vibrant film culture that commercial theaters alone cannot provide.
