On Sunday, June 2, join FLIFF, RKVIST (pronounced “archivist”) and the Pink Angels Memorial Foundation for “Marilyn Monroe’s Birthday Celebration” – an event celebrating the 98th birthday of Hollywood’s iconic movie star with the screening of one of the most beloved films of all time, “Some Like it Hot”, along with a bonus screening of a special short film, “My Day with Marilyn”, the captivating story of a 17-year-old waiter who fell into a police sidecar and found himself inches away photographing Marilyn Monroe at the 1952 Miss America Parade.
“Marilyn Monroe’s Birthday Celebration” kicks off with a reception and Marilyn Monroe look-alike contest followed by a screening of “Some Like it Hot”, the Billy Wilder comedy starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon – considered to be one of the greatest films of all time.
And in honor of one of the world’s most photographed movie stars, the event will feature a bonus screening of “My Pop & Marilyn Monroe”, a short film created by South Florida archivist Stephane Heller that shares the story of her father, Sam Heller, who was a 17-year-old waiter working in Atlantic City and got caught up in the media frenzy to find himself inches away photographing Hollywood’s greatest movie star.
The film was created by Stephanie Heller to celebrate her father’s recent 89th birthday. Capturing people’s stories through photographs is more than a hobby for Ms. Heller who, after decades in the theater working for Broadway Producer Manny Azenberg, at Chicago’s Second City, and co-founding City Theatre’s “Summer Shorts Festival”, pivoted to launching RKVIST (pronounced “archivist”), a company dedicated to helping families and businesses nationwide preserve their photos, videos – and their priceless stories.
