Overtown is the oldest Black community in Miami and it has borne witness to the full arc of the civil rights movement. Through interviews with historians and Miami residents, the film traces the city’s history from the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras to today’s social justice movements. Experts also discuss Miami’s lesser-known and integral role in early nonviolent protest.

What is an “Awkward Discussion”
South Florida People of Color’s penned “Awkward Discussions” are inspired by their award-winning Awkward Dinner(tm) series, which is all about creating a safe but challenging space for honest, sometimes uncomfortable conversations.
The format is highly customized to fit the event and audience, usually involving guided questions, small group or pair discussions, and facilitated dialogue that encourages participants to connect personally with the themes—moving beyond surface-level talk.
These interactive conversations are designed to help people listen deeply, share authentically, and leave with new insights and a sense of community.
