Presented for FREE as part of FLIFF’s “FAB REEL Connections”
Joe is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn’t quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz and he’s good. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul.
FLIFF’s partner for this edition of “FAB Reel Connections” is the South Florida Pride Bands. During the process of selecting a film for this collaborations, several films and concepts were explored. Pride Jazz Band director Edgar Rubio was inspired to choose this film; and everyone was thrilled with the unexpected choice.
Disney/Pixar film Soul celebrates the joy of music, the importance of music education, and the passion that inspires us to keep playing.
That message resonates with every member of the South Florida Pride Bands organization. Whether we’re teachers, students, professionals, retirees, or lifelong musicians, we’ve all experienced the moments when music challenges us, connects us, and reminds us why we began playing in the first place.
We hope this film and performance by the South Florida Jazz Band, led by Director Edgar Rubio, inspires families, young people, and aspiring musicians to discover the joy of making music, encourages former musicians to pick up their instruments again, and that it’s not too late to be part of a musical community. We also hope it shines a light on the educators who nurture that passion, and to recognize that the true value of music lies not only in the applause we receive, but in the lives we touch, the connections we create, and the communities we build through it.
As our final installment of “Reel Connections” will include a reception and a performance by the South Florida Pride Band’s Jazz Ensemble. As always, tickets are free to the event. Donations are always appreciated!
