Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin became the first businesswoman of France when she was only 27. In Thomas Napper’s movie Widow Clicquot, she is portrayed by a mesmerizing Haley Bennett, and we follow her life as she tries to overcome her grief after the death of her husband while she tries to keep control over their estate.
The movie has two storylines. In the first one, we follow the romance between the Grande Dame of Champagne and her husband, François Clicquot, portrayed by Tom Sturridge, who slowly falls into an addiction to opium and struggles with a mental illness. In the present storyline, Widow Clicquot has to fight against her father-in-law and skeptical men of the wine industry who do not believe that a woman could ever dominate in this field of work.
